Is this LARP for me?

The Bard's Tale is a free form, mechanics light LARP that focuses on self-discovery and character relationships. This LARP will most likely appeal to you if you are interested in the following:

  • Performing (reading short scenes in front of other players)

  • Playing to lift and playing to lose to facilitate a better overall collective story

  • Roleplaying within the Themes of A Bard's Tale

  • Shakespeare in general (although no detailed knowledge is needed, it would help if you've seen a film or play of your Role)

  • Scenes with strong emotional undercurrents

  • Taking responsibility for your own experience and story, with possible guidance from GM prompts

This LARP will likely not be for you if you dislike any of the above, are looking for a competitive experience, or are wanting a structured event where the ending is predetermined by an overarching plot. It is also not for you if you cannot abide by our Code of Conduct.

Do i need to memorize my readings?

Absolutely not. All of the players will be given a physical copy of their plays before the game begins to have in-hand during your readings. While it is helpful if you have glanced at the readings before hand (we will tell you long before the LARP which readings are expected), it is not a requirement. No player is expected to have anything memorized at any time.

Do i need to know tons about Shakespeare to enjoy this LARP?

No! In fact, we even have characters built in for those who have never seen or read a piece of Shakespeare in their life. While we believe that those who have seen or read at least a few Shakespeare plays will likely find this LARP the most enjoyable, we aim to provide an inclusive experience that is centered around defining one's place in the universe and building relationships with those around you.

Will i be required to speak in iambic pentameter?

No! In fact, we ask that players do not speak in iambic pentamer during play unless they are performing their readings to facilitate understanding for all players. The Bard's Tale 5 is an international LARP meaning that some of our players may not be native English speakers, and we want to give them the best chance at feeling included by making the language as simple as it can possibly be.

What do I need to do to prepare for this LARP?

Generally, you don't need to do anything to prepare, however we suggest the following to prepare to portray your Roles:

  1. Read the play your character is in. (There are many free online resources to do so as all of Shakespeare's works are in the public domain. You will receive a hard copy of the play during the game to keep)

  2. If they are available for your play, we recommend watching a film or two or even clips online to find inspiration on how you might want to portray your Role.

  3. Talk to your fellow players from your play and do a reading of the scenes that you share (we have chosen characters because they do share scenes with each other)

  4. Consider how your Thespian might see other Roles or Thespians
